This project was entirely student-founded. I served as Founder and Executive Director, with 70%+ influence over program design, curriculum development, and operations. A 5-person team supported logistics, outreach, and events. Contributions from partners (Cooper Hewitt, AIGA SC) and students are acknowledged beneath the respective items.

OVERVIEW + IMPACT METRICS

Beyond the Box was a nonprofit I created to bring design thinking and social justice education to South Carolina students — a resource often missing in local schools.

30+ students trained in design thinking through a custom curriculum.

Earned a 9.3/10 NPS for program satisfaction.

Recruited and managed a 5-person team and sourced $5,000+ in funding from grants and sponsorships.

Built partnerships with Cooper Hewitt and AIGA SC to expand program reach.

At the heart of Beyond the Box was a hands-on design thinking curriculum I created from scratch. The workshops emphasized active participation, hands-on learning in a virtual environment, and creative ownership.

This was a virtual event held during COVID-19, a time when many students felt isolated and disconnected. To help bridge that gap, we created a designer toolkit that was shipped free of charge to every attendee. One highlight was the Workshop Journal, a tangible piece sent to each participant to make the experience feel more engaging and personal. Take a look:
