Organic Chemistry... notoriously one of the most difficult courses in college. And yet, no major app for learning the material. As a TA for the course, my students constantly ask about extra practice problems to reinforce reactions, mechanisms, and concepts. That’s why I am creating the OneMinChem app.
I interviewed 10+ chemistry undergraduates and TAs to uncover learning pain points:
Students struggle with abstract visual concepts like orbitals and hybridization.
Students prefer (short) online video tutorials over textbook readings.
Students wanted systems for spaced repetition and gamified learning.
This app follows that principle by prioritizing interactive exercises over long lectures. Each unit includes no more than four short (1-minute) videos, with the majority of learning happening through hands-on practice.
Character-driven art and playful animations create a gamified feel that makes complex concepts approachable and memorable. Check out a short concept video:
This project is still in progress, but the following are next steps.
Expand curriculum through the end of Organic Chemistry II.
Narrate animations.
Integrate OpenAI API to generate dynamic “More Details” explanations.
Deploy v1 on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
